Beyond

Beyond features the original compositions of acclaimed Hindustani vocalist Dr. Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, reimagined for string quartet by alumni from the Shastra Summer Collaborative. Each arrangement preserves the intention of the original bhajan, and expands to encompass new textures and colors characteristic of Western art music. Some tracks are haunting, some are sweet and intimate, and others are driving and rhythmic — each piece brings a unique perspective to a classic bhajan. 

This album features arrangements by Shane Cook, Akshaya Tucker, Kara Ford, Anton Ariki Sten and Reena Esmail. It was recorded by Saili Oak and Salastina Music Society at Allegro Recording Studios. The album was released on Toro Records and is available to stream or download online across digital music platforms.

This seamless blend of both traditions exemplifies Shastra’s mission: to create an authentic, engaging dialogue between these two musical cultures.
